Edinburgh Zoo Now Open – updates for disabled visitors
Edinburgh Zoo will reopen on Monday 29 June 2020.
Read our FAQs for more information about the wide range of safety measures in place to protect you, our staff and our animals.
Please note: Due to current restrictions, there will be no mobility vehicle available until further notice. We are looking into options for a safe mobility vehicle service and will keep this page updated.
Edinburgh Zoo seeks to provide equal opportunities for all visitors and we are working hard to ensure that our visitor facilities are accessible to everyone.
Free admission for carers
Visitors who require special assistance are offered free admission for one accompanying carer when they pay the full adult/concession/child price.
Please bring relevant proof of entitlement such as a ‘plus one’ travel card or letter from Disability Living Allowance as this will be asked for on arrival.
Disabled parking
A limited number of disabled parking spaces are available in our car park. Parking for Blue Badge holders is free of charge. On arrival, please present your badge to our car park attendant who will help direct you to an available space.
Please follow this link for a full list of terms and conditions, including those for parking.
Accessible route
Many of the paths around the Zoo can be accessed by wheelchair. Due to the hilly nature of our location, some routes involve steps or steep slopes which are unsuitable for wheelchairs. Please download a copy of our accessibility map, which highlights these areas and may be useful for planning your visit before you arrive.
Please note: this map is for general accessibility reference only. It was last updated in 2014 and since then our animal collection or the location of certain animals may have changed. If there is a specific animal or exhibit that you are keen to see during your visit please consult visitor services prior to entering the park.
Mobility Vehicle
Due to the ongoing situation we are currently experiencing with COVID-19, we are unable to safely operate the mobility vehicle.
We are looking into other mobility support options for the site, however in the meantime if you require additional assistance please speak to a member of staff or email us.
This vehicle has been kindly sponsored by Allied Mobility of Glasgow
Wheelchair Hire
A limited number of manual wheelchairs are available for free hire from the main entrance. A £10.00 deposit is required, which is fully refundable on return of the wheelchair to point of collection. These are available on a first come first served basis.
Registered assistance dogs
Only fully trained and accredited assistance dogs, who are assisting a visitor, are permitted to enter the Zoo but please be aware that access may be restricted to certain areas. Please bring relevant proof of accreditation as this may be asked for on arrival. If you wish to bring an assistance dog into the park, please inform a member of our admissions team when you arrive.
* all registered assistance dogs must be up-to-date with all inoculations
* dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and under strict control
* dogs must not be allowed to defecate anywhere in the zoo grounds and any incidents should be cleared away by their owners
Unfortunately, we are unable to allow assistance dogs into any indoor or walkthrough exhibits, or certain outdoor areas. Further information is available on arrival, by clicking here to downloading a copy of our Assistance Dog Restrictions, or by contacting us on 0131 314 0326 or email info@rzss.org.uk.
If the behaviour of our animals is affected by the presence of your dog please move away from the area. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however, this is to ensure the safety of our animals, visitors and your dog.
