Saltersgate School’s ‘The Great Monkey Escape’ animation is revealed

As part of Dalkeith’s Museum’s Corn Exchange community engagement project, pupils from Saltersgate school have been developing an exciting piece of work in response to the story of the escaped monkeys from the Zoo circus in 1933 in Ironmills Park.

Using newspaper articles as a starting point, the pupils have been creating drawings and images to illustrate the story and have created a short piece of animation.

Some of the monkeys took up residence in people’s homes after escaping from the circus, and the whole town was on the lookout for the animals well after the circus was long gone.

Pupils used their own drawings to create this stop frame animation to retell the tale for us today.
